Counseling provides community mental health services through counselors, coaches, pastoral counselors, residents, and others. Clients may include diagnosed individuals, families, and couples. Other clients may include individuals, families, and couples who are in good mental health, but are seeking relief from life stresses and personal or relational issues.
The goal of counseling in general is to help people learn to cope with, or overcome issues in life that interfere with daily functioning or life satisfaction. Mental Health Counseling services to our clients are provided by Licensed Professional Counselors or Counselors in Residence under supervision by a licensed therapist, or Counseling Interns and Practicum students enrolled in accredited graduate programs. Human Services Counseling is provided by Masters and Bachelors degree holding individuals who specialize in working with non-mental health issues that are more severe than coaching can attend to, but do not rise to the level of mental health counselingĀ or psycho-therapeutic interventions. Christian counseling is for those whose issues and needs are similar to those of community counseling clients, but is done in the tradition of Jude0-Christian ministry. As such, Christian Counselors apply many of the same tools and techniques as mental health counselors, but do so with the understanding that tools and skills are second to an overarching focus on improving the client’s own psycho-social-biological-spiritual health. Christian Counselors at VBCC must have both counselor training and theological training.
